Audix Sound Check

Steve Pettit

Atlanta, Geogia

I am a preacher in the North Atlanta metro area. After preforming a wedding for a couple, the groom said he would like to give me something; turned out to be an Audix RAD-360 wireless with the HT5 headset. I was currently using a Sennheiser/Countryman combo.

Since using the double ear Audix, I have never looked back. I enjoy the natural sound of the Audix as well as the predictability of the whole system. The last thing I want is any distraction. This combination has eliminated that.

Since I recieved my Audix as a gift, I was concerned about service and warranty. The great thing is that I have not had any problems with it in 7 months of double services. Equally cool though; the guys at Audix said they would work with us should we ever have a manufacturer defect. That only happens when you believe in your product.

We have now gone on to purchase several other Audix mics for our worship team. In fact, we always check for an Audix application first when we need a new mic.

If you want to see and hear it in action, go to BOCvideo.com

Hi there,

I'm working as monitor engineer for a project featuring a big band, a 23-piece string section and various soloists.
The biggest problem except mic bleed for a situation like this is the piano in the monitors.

For F.o.H. the Boesendorfer grand is miked with two really expensive boundary mic's taped inside the lid.
for monitors i clamped a D-4 on the pianos stringframe, right in the middle pointing to the hammers (the lid is open approx.6 inches).

the eq-setting:
low mid with broad Q at 400 Hz -2,5 dB
notch at 112 Hz at -7 dB.
These settings depend (as always) on the room, the desk and the wedges.

What i got is a brilliant and full piano sound, even in the piano players wedge.
Very much gain before feedback!

Unfortunately my 48-channel-desk is full, because when the channels are no problem i usually add a second mic to this system and move the D-4 to the lower strings while a D-1 is added to the high strings. This setup usually wakes up the dead (and also the deaf).

sidenote 1:
The guy in the recordingtruck asked me during linecheck: "whats that third channel in the piano?".
I told him that it is just my little helper for monitors and he said: "don't move it,please! it's the first time I hear balls on a Boesendorfer, and I'm shure this will be my main piano mic for tomorrow. I will use the condensers just a little bit as sparkle!"

The same thing was said by the F.o.H. engineer.

sidenote 2:
I own more than 50 mic's , 16 of them were build by Audix and i will own them till i die...

Hey Guys! I have a one man company in Austria. I work with a lot of different bands from Heavy Metal to Pop.

I have a D6 for the kick at first and the sound was amazing so also bought D4's. D2's. i-5's, and ADX51's.

I was on tour with 5 bands for 17 shows with this set.... AWESOME....

I had no problems for the whole tour - every night with a nice clear sound on all the drums! After one of the shows, the promoter came up to me at the mixing console and asked "What have you done with the kick to make it sound so great?

My answer "Nothing - just the Audix D6"

Take care and Rock n Roll !

I play for my church, and use a Marshall 6101 amp. I have been using the xlr out on the amp direct to the mixer and muting the internal speaker But the amp never sounded as good as when I practiced with the speaker unmuted.

I knew I needed to mic the amp, and I had my mind set on a well known comptetitors instrument mic. But I wanted something more in a mic than 40 year old technology. So, after reading blog after blog, and talking to many experts, I was constantly being directed to the Audix i5. So, I ordered one and hooked it up.

WOW, it was like taking a blanket off of the amp when I heard it on the house speakers compared to direct out from the amp.

If you need to mic your amp (and I suggest you do), don't settle for the "industry standard" that's been around forever, get the i5! You will love the accurate reproduction of your sound!

Audix News Story : Tim Dwyer

"I don't recommend you try this at home, but after reading about Shure's "drop test", I took one of my spare OM-2 out to the garage and dropped it several times from about mic-stand level to a piece of 3/4" plywood. I dropped it straight down, at an angle, every way I could think of that it might hit the ground. Well, if you ever want to remove a dent from your windscreen, take the ball off, remove the foam insert, and use a broom handle or similar item to push the ball back into shape. However, you apparently won't need to do anything to your Audix mic, because it will still keep working even after all that abuse. Remember, I said I did it with a SPARE OM-2.

The photo is from The Kansas City Star's website, and the mic is my personal favorite OM-6.

(Additional note from Audix)

Thanks Tim. The grill ball for the OM series mics is made from an spring steel grill which is extremeley dent resistant. Aside from the rugged capsule construction, the grill can take an amazing amount of punishment compared to other popular brands. "

The Audix mics really made a difference at our last clinic/concert, featuring Zoro the Drummer. From the crystal clear highs to the monster kick drum sound, the audio really captivated the audience. Not only did the mics sound incredible, they required almost no EQ adjustment. Sound check was an absolute breeze. Memphis Drum Shop is sold!

Here is a torrent of the mics (M1280-HC) in action at Phish in Knoxville two days ago: http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=525790

The mics had a nice bright sound, but still pulled in a smooth low end. I was running AKG 480/ck61 mics in 03/04 for Phish but like the sound of the micros so much more. Just what I was looking for!

Today, I became the owner of a VX5 microphone. I would like to tell you what happened, and how I came to own this amazing piece of equipment.
I am a preacher, and a Christian singer/piano player. I have a month of engagements, and accidentally left my usual mic, a Beta87 at the house. Today, I went to the local guitar center where I am singing this weekend, and asked what condensers they had. The guy wanted to sell me another 87, or an EV, and neither sounded appealing, so I asked if they had any Audix vocal condensers in stock, and he mentioned the VX5. I asked him if I could demo the mic, and he agreed, offering to hook it up to a Bose system. I know better! Bose colors up the sound, and I wouldn’t have gotten an accurate representation of the mic, so I asked to plug into the system that had music playing from it, running with Yamaha speakers, and a Yamaha board whose preamps I’m very familiar with.

When I plugged the VX5 in, and started to sing, I heard elements of my voice no other mic has captured before. It was almost like a vocal make-over, but it was too good to be true, so I asked the gentleman to bring the Beta out for an A/B comparison. I sung the exact same vocal passage on the Beta, and while I was singing, the salesman turned to my friend that was with me, and pointed to the Audix. Of course, my ears instantly told me that I’d be a couple hundred bucks poorer within a few minutes, so to make a long story even longer, I’m now the proud owner of a VX5, and can’t wait to use it everywhere I go. If you know anyone who’s searching for a Shure Beta87, I have one for sale, as well as a Sennheiser e865, and an Autio-Technica AT33A. I’ve tried them all, and love this one best! Thanks for making such a great product. Audix has just gained another faithful fan, and if you ever put the VX5 in a wireless, I’m sure I’ll buy that as well!

No other microphones compare to Audix microphones - They are the best. They are made in the USA, they look great, the quality is excellent and they sound amazing. I know that my Audix D2, D6, i5 and OM5 will make me sound great, so before the show I can relax with piece of mind. After the show, I’m always complimented on how good my drums and vocals sounded. Photo taken before the show. Enough said!

We are very pleased with our purchase of the AUDIX Micro-Booms (MB-1280). They were purchased as a replacement for our hanging choir mics and after the installation the difference was phenomenal. The clarity, coverage, and the EQ curve all exceeded of our expectations. What is liked about the Micro-Booms also is the slender look and the versatility that you can place them anywhere. For example, every year we do a major Easter production and looking at a video of the production done before the purchase of the 1280’s you can see the hanging mics in several of the shots which was very distracting. For this year’s performance we were able to strategically hide them in various parts of the set and other parts of the stage giving us a “clean” look and improving the sound quality dramatically. Other applications that we have used them in are micing orchestras’ and using as a speech mic. I would highly recommend the MB-1280’s to any church that is looking to purchase new choir mics.

"I just wanted to start by saying that I love your microphones. I am a band director in North Jersey, and the front ensemble instructor for the Raiders Drum and Bugle Corps. We started using your microphones last year, with the raiders, on our front ensemble, as DCI (drum corps international) is now allowing for amplification. Great Stuff!"

"I spoke to one of the guys at Audix a couple of months ago, and I. Have to admit that I couldn't believe that the D6 could make that much of a difference.

I can't remember the name of the Rep., but I hope he gets this message. Oh-My-Goodness!!!

That mic is amazing. Nothing I could say about the D6 would do it justice. Like I was told... You have use one to appreciate what it can do!
Thanks for encouraging me to try the D6."

"My name is Stone Michaels and I have recently purchased two of your RAD360 systems from Sticks-N-Strings here in Tucson. I was very skeptical as I have always been a Shure fan and have used them for years. Tony was very persistent and gave in. I tell you he did not steer me wrong. I love these systems. One is a wireless headset and the other for my guitar. We plan on buying three more systems soon."

HIghlights from JazzFest 09 in New Orleans

Artist Relations, Phil Garfinkel, reports from NOLA!

Over 300 Audix microphones were scattered about the second largest event in New Orleans (next to Mardi Gras). Whether provided by Garfinkel, or brought in by sounds engineers and artists, Audix mics were present on almost every stage at the fest.
